Here are some guidelines to figure out if emo is for you! Actually emo is a genre of music, but you are probably looking for some guide so i rewrited one from wikihow, for you.
Here it is:
Listen to emo music. Emo is a genre of rock music; at first it was used in the 80’s to describe a subgenre of hardcore punk! Anyway try to listen to it, if you can feel it and like it than you can read further. You’ll have to listen to lots of music if you don’t want to be considered a poser (fake emo). Music should help you in getting your <i> inner</i> emo (at least you’ll find out if you have it or not) and should inspire you to write your own songs and poetry, this isn’t mandatory in my opinion but definately you have to be unique and don’t copy other persons. Emo is associated with being sad, insecure and depressed; well don’t hunt to look like this, you have to feel it so try and discover your sensitive side!
Now you think emo, next step would be to look like an emo kid. Specific for emo kids is the hair. Most have it black, swept to one side and covering their eye. If you are a boy you can have your fringe dyed with a lighter color. Let’s get to clothes, you need a totally new wardrobe. Tight shirts with emo bands, emo messages (”distroy the world for a better tomorrow for eg), checkers and stripes can also fit very well, tight jeans and Converse shoes, Globes or Vans. Don’t forget the eyeliner on the top and bottom and to make your nails black!
If you are mainly doing this to get some girls, i suggest you think again and be ready to confront with nazies and the huge amount of emo haters that could ruin your life! Be prepared!

i luv emos they are soo cool i dont realy consider myself one but i do have my days, i have dyed black hair and do listen to the music i luv that too. i hate the ppl that are stereotype others because it is just expressing yourself and wat u listen to soo.. to alll emo, punk, goth, grungers u rock i luv u : ) !!!!!
Like you said one either is or not, its just the question of finding out if you are or not.
I may be wrong but hey… the way I see, Emo is… (forgetting the “emo people don’t exist” this that have been said on lov-emo forum)… the way you feel, think and see things, I think one may be emo and not look like one, the looks are just something branded by people as emo.
Me? I didn’t know what the heck emo meant until a few months back, yet I believe I had a lot to do with it since I was 15 (im 20 now lol)…to get by I had to learn to use a damn mask to bury everything deep, not to speak my mind… and now its kind of hard to take the mask off…
well, i don’t think that to be emo is so hard but u can’t be an emo if u don’t feel like this… i mean that if u don’t feel that u can be an emo better don’t try.. this is in my case… i wanted to be an emo, i tried but … i’m to happy for being an emo, that’s it, but all the emos must know that i appreciate them a lot! u are the best.

I’m reading all of these comments, and feel, actually hapiness(which doesn’t happen to me a lot)… I’m not alone…
I was emo since…since I remember myself, it is just I didn’t have that look or anything. Honestly, I thought smth was wrong with me. Two or three years ago, smb was like, why you don’t have that look , cause you are totally emo.
Well, now I’ve changed, and not afraid of showing who I am. But in my school only few actually know what emo is, and they think that I’m goth(I hate this!)
So, here I am, all alone, and nobody understands, nobody even don’t want to try, I feeling so misarable………….
i am mad emo and i enjoy many passtimes such as crying, writing poetry, wearing clothes 437652735 sizes too small for me, getting piecerd in stupid ways and places and of course hating my parents and life.
im heaps non conforming because i look exactly the same as the guy i hang out with every weekend in the city. my parents dont like that i feel so deeply, but its ok because now i cut from the knee up and they dont realise anymore.
oh yeah and emo is really hot and i like guys that look like ethiopians with long black fringes and pale skin.

i totaly agree there is no guide wat so ever to being emo. its not a choice. i feel this way because of wat has happened in my life. and no, i do not slit my wrists, i dont load on the eyeliner and i didnt die my hair completely black. i do wear make up, my hair is awesome and no one else has it. i dont worry about my nails, i paint them black. so for all the emo-wanna be’s… i say be yourself (even if it means being a preppy bitch)

this is so neat, i didnt know this was here, i feel indirectly loved right now…. i didnt even know that i cut myself, (since i didnt actualy slice my skin with a sharp object) i would scratch my self till i bled….. when i was helplessly angry and sad, anyways recently( in the past year) i have pushed that part of me under my newly developed shell, no one knows now, i hide under a jubilant person…. not to often do i cry now, since iam now beliving iam that jubilant person, but it comes back and reminds me from time to time, and i have realized that crying isent a weakness…. what an enlightening sight….

in life, you want to obey or to be yourself?, for example, in the punk movement, one of the main ideas, was not being the same as all the people, to be different, but don’t you realize that you are just another sheep?, you are following the punk ppl, as the “normal” people do follow their leaders?…

i hav very dark brown hair (ALMOST black!) sumtimes i get really really really angry with my parents, and i don’t c da point of livin, i listen 2 emo music, (but i also like stuff like girls aloud, leona, rihanna, etc) iv just started writing poetry, evry1 @ school says im emo, but i dont think they really know what it means … but then sumtimes i just feel really happy, and glad 2 b alive and all that crap that sounds so sappy writen down

I and my freinds consider me an emo but I dont look the part at all. I am pretty young in comparison with you 13 or I think but I listen to the music write my own depressing poetry and feel sad and depressed, but I want to look the part but when i try to put my hair emo it wont work. i am always feeling sad or strange or different.
i listen to all kindd of music, but i prefer emo music.

all of you people asking if your emo, no one can answer you. you are what you are and your being stereotypical about it. emo people don’t cut themselves, emo people can laugh, and not all emo people are depressed. emo stands for emotional, meaning that they show theyre emotions, but technically, its just a genre of music. they are empathetic and sympathetic, and most of them are depressed, but not all of them are. either way, dont be a poser. if you like to dress “emo” then dress like that, but dont go around saying “oh, look how emo i am, i cut myself and cry at night blah blah blah, i hate life, everyone go die” cause thats not how they act. they are great to talk to when you are sad because they will understand, but theyre not gonna go home and kill themselves right after….dont be a poser, be you

Haiz iuno if im emo or not cuz i occasionally cut maself when i feel like i need to and i wear mostly black and have tons of emo music i listen to almost 24/7. But ai dont use and piercings or makeup or styling products, just sad little me and ma flat iron.
I find it fun to cut cuz its like having a free tattoo that stays alot longer that the shitty tattoos that dollorama sells (as if i buy that shit).
